Description

IT Governance: From the Boardroom to the Boiler-room

The recent ratification of the ISO’s standard for Corporate Governance in Information Technology highlights the importance of governance in organisations today. Research indicates that, on average, only 38% of managers understand how IT decisions are governed in their organisation. This corresponds to a common complaint that many of the technologies being deployed in the office today, such as collaboration, social networking and instant messaging are difficult to apply managerial control over without restricting the features.

As more information technology investment moves into managing “unstructured data” such as documents and workgroup output it becomes clear that greater attention must be given to how these systems are deployed and presented to users. How can users be empowered to use the technology and to make efficient decisions while still applying sufficient control over how they use it? The question naturally leads back to the IT governance framework for the organisation and how it applies to managerial policies.

The problem comes when trying to make use of high-level governance policies by applying them to daily demands in the workplace. There is often a gap between the necessarily generalised statements that can apply to an entire organisation and the specific policies and practices that IT managers need in order to harness technology and software effectively. In this seminar we discuss how to view IT governance as a resource that can be used and applied to bring greater value from collaboration and knowledge management technologies.
