The result is Contende — and we trust that within these pages you will enjoy a record of special memories from those who have been educated at, or associated with, one of the oldest GPS schools in Australia. St Joseph’s rich history is reflected in each family’s contribution and in the narrative throughout this book. Together they represent the strength and spirit of the Joeys community and give us a written record of traditions, friendships and celebrations. Contende is the product of much laughter, collaboration and determination. Many people, all named in the last pages, have actively been a part of its publication. During the two weeks of photography one of our most enduring memories is of lunch, when we would gather around a table to feast on the recipes being photographed. We have all made new friends or deepened existing relationships as we worked on this, and that has been a great gift for us. It has been a wonderful project to be involved in — thank you for purchasing Contende and supporting the ongoing development of St Joseph’s College.

Two years ago we began with a simple idea: to publish a collection of recipes and stories, supplied by families associated in the past or present with St Joseph’s College, Hunters Hill, so you were reading more than a recipe and could enjoy memories associated with that dish or with the College. But, of course, simple ideas have a way of growing — particularly when you start with a team of highly motivated personalities, add the creative flair of others and top it off with a pair whose obsessive attention to detail means they dream, speak and think of nothing but ‘the book’.
